There have been more than 27,000 reports of identity theft in Pennsylvania so far this year. FOX43 discovers simple ways to protect yourself.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — As you soak up all that summer has to offer, someone else may try to do the same using your identity.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than 27,000 Pennsylvanians have filed reports of identity theft since the start of the year. It is one of the highest case numbers in the country.

QuoteWizard found that reports of identity theft in the Commonwealth have increased by 268% since 2019.

“It just seems like Pennsylvania was the target of this because we don’t really see a pattern as to why one state had more than the others,” said Nick VinZant, principal analyst for QuoteWizard.

VinZant said the figures show a sharp increase in reports of theft of credit cards, banks and government documents, adding “It started as soon as the pandemic really started and as soon as the stimulus payments and other efforts relief began to advance. it’s something that the criminals took advantage of and there was so much more opportunity for it.”

The main targets of identity theft are now the people who earn and save the most money.

“Between 30 and 54 are the top victims of identity theft fraud today and this is directly related to bank fraud and credit card fraud,” VinZant said.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Check your credit report. You should do this at least once a year anyway, just to make sure nothing seems out of place.

Be sure to change your banking and credit card app passwords at least once a year.

There is some good news. Since identity theft is more common, it’s easier to address it if it happens to you.

The US Department of Justice found that half of all recently surveyed identity theft victims took one day or less to resolve all issues related to the crime.
